Coaching Tip: Your athletes perception is their reality. As the saying goes…"An ounce of image is worth a pound of performance". Meet your athlete at their perception, not what you think the athlete should be feeling.

As a coach, help the athlete interpret, cope and possibly change the reality as the athlete sees it. Whether it is a performance slump, playing time frustration or relationships with teammates, these all affect the perception of the athletes role on the team. Listen and rephrase their statements until you understand their perception and then proceed to help them change their interpretation if necessary.
